Latest was, "Old Man's war" by John Scalzi, that was fucking amazing...
Before that:
Enders Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Good stuff right there!

Also try the short novel "All you need is kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazak, you might recognise certain elements of a recent Hollywood movie.  8)

Stephen King - The Dark Tower (8 Books)
His lifework. Don't get fooled by the first impression of a western like theme. It's an awesome fantasy saga.

James Rollins - Sandstorm, Operation Amazonas and most of his other books, especially Sigma Force. Basically Thriller with Fantasy and SciFi elements.

Frank Schätzing - The Swarm, Thriller

I've read all of these books in german but I guess they are at least equally awesome in english.

i just started readin Star Trek  Deep Space Nine - A Stitch In Time by Andrew Robinson. (you really dont need genre definition... its star trek after all right?)

so far its been very VERY good read. and characters are true to the characters in deep space nine tv series. (the book was written by the actor who played Garak)

Stone by Adam Roberts.

If you haven't read any Adam Roberts, you're missing out. Check out Jack Glass for the best SF murder mystery ever.
I don't give a shit about what you think is wrong with the game.

The Immortal Prince, by Jennifer Fallon........ it's pretty good, typical fantasy type novel, there's 4 in the series and this is the first, so I'm hoping it's going to be a decent read.

I read a lot of books, so I'd strongly recommend,

- Brandon Sanderson, anything by this guy seems to be great, he is touched with genius! (especially The Stormlight Archive series)

- All the "Wheel of Time" books, classic with great characters and epic story, the kind of books you could read over and over again!

- The First Law Series, by Joe Abercrombie (and all the others set in the same universe, there's another 2 or 3), really excellent gritty fantasy, Longen Ninefingers is one of my favorite character out of all the books I've read.

-The Dresden Files, I've read all 14 or so and they're nice and simple modern fantasy, not too long too!

- Richard Morgan, anything from this guy, both Sci-fi and Fantasy, really good stories, no messing with the action!

- The Void Trilogy, by Peter F. Hamilton

- Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss, another modern fantasy classic, if he'll ever finish the series!

:) (edited after noticing my heinous crime to Robert Jordan!)

Think you mean Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan? :)

Throwing in another suggestion too: Neuromancer by William Gibson. THE classic in cyberpunk literature. Has been an inspiration for stuff like The Matrix and Shadowrun.
